“Mommy, what was the best birthday present you got as a kid”?

And guess what? I can never remember.

While I had many birthday parties and opened many presents as a kid, I can never recall the one toy that stood out.

But what I do remember is the kind of home I had in my childhood, and so I share those memories with them.

And I tend to keep this in mind when I think of my own children’s childhood.

What kind of home will they remember?

I Hope They Remember They Were Loved

With each day that passes, it’s going by so fast. Cue the tears.

This quote is so true: “The days are long, but the years are short”.

Because of this, I make it a point to tell all four of my kids daily how much I love them, how thankful and proud I am of them, and how blessed I am that God chose ME to be their mom.

Our kids need to hear the words I love you, every day.

I Hope They Remember We Depended On Jesus

While this world is fleeting, Christ isn’t. We can have hope and joy because Jesus is alive. Thank you, Lord!

I hope they remember all the times we depended on Jesus through prayer.

Praying in uncertainty, praying for healing in their injuries or family and friends, or the times we prayed for a family to know Christ.

I hope memories of family Bible study come to mind, and how we forgave each other, or the many times we prayed together at home and the morning prayer in the car as we ran errands.

Most of all, I hope they always remember who they are- a child of God, the One true King, and He loves them.

I Hope They Remember the Little Things

It’s the ordinary moments that become lasting memories.

The things that seem ordinary in my eyes, but everything to them- from morning family walks, baking all their favorite treats, laughing during family read-alouds, to picking a family movie on movie night, endless Monopoly games, family dinners, bedtime dodge ball, and sweet bedtime stories.

I know it’s in these everyday moments that seem ordinary but create such core memories- I hope they remember the little things.

A Legacy Built One Ordinary Day at a Time

Even in the unseen homemaking days, we are living in the good ‘ole days.

Our children probably won’t remember whether the floors were spotless or the laundry was folded. But they’ll remember how home felt.

It is here where faith is growing, deep connections are being created, and legacy is being built.

The rhythms we establish in our home matter deeply and are worth pursuing in a Christ-centered home.

The kind of home I hope my children remember is the kind of home I pray they look forward to creating one day, too- deeply loved and faithfully depending on Jesus.

One simple rhythm we’ve added to our summer days is memorizing Scripture together as a family.

As Christians, we know that God’s Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). Summer provides a wonderful opportunity to spend extra time in Scripture and help our children hide God’s Word in their hearts.

If you’ve ever wanted to memorize Scripture with your kids but weren’t sure where to start, let me encourage you: it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Why We Memorize Scripture with Kids

We don’t memorize Scripture with our kids simply for the sake of knowing a certain number of Bible verses.

We memorize Scripture because God’s Word helps us know Him more.

As we read, study, and memorize Scripture, we grow closer to the Lord and learn to seek Him first. His Word is like a seed planted in our hearts that grows deeper roots as we continue walking in His ways.

We also memorize Scripture so we can encourage others with God’s truth.

You never know when the Holy Spirit will bring a verse to mind that a friend, family member, or even your own child needs to hear. God’s Word has a way of speaking directly into our lives at just the right moment.

As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, God’s Word is living and active, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Four Bible Verses We’re Memorizing This Summer

Here are the four verses our kids are memorizing this summer:

Psalm 119:11

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

This verse reminds our children that God’s Word helps guide our thoughts, actions, and decisions. When we know Scripture, the Holy Spirit can bring it to mind when we need wisdom and direction.

Proverbs 13:20

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

This verse opens up great conversations about friendships and choosing people who encourage us to follow Jesus.

1 Timothy 4:12

*”Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.

This verse reminds our children that even though they are young, they can still set an example to all ages of their faith through their actions, behaviors, and choices.

Roman 8:38-39

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This verse is a good reminder of the confidence we hold in our love, salvation, and eternity with Christ- our kids need to know nothing can take them away from our Savior.

How We Memorize Scripture with Kids

Our method is simple when it comes to memorizing scripture with our kids.

Every night before bed, I recite the chosen verse to our kids (ages 6–11), then I have them recite it with me, and finally I try to have them recite it back on their own. It’s not perfect, but we do this daily—and within just a few days, they’re usually able to say it on their own.

I also take time to break down the meaning of words they may not understand and explain how the verse applies to their everyday life. This helps Scripture feel real and understandable, not just something they are memorizing for the sake of memorizing.

We are called not only to be hearers of God’s Word, but doers as well (James 1:22).

One Simple Way to Create a Christ-Centered Home

Friend, this is one simple way we are working toward a Christ-centered home: reading and knowing God’s Word together.

We’ve seen this even in small moments—like our girls recognizing Bible verses during VBS that we had already been memorizing at home. It was such a sweet reminder that God is faithful to use even the simplest efforts to plant His Word deep in their hearts.

These are the kinds of connections we don’t plan or manufacture. They are gifts from the Lord as we remain faithful in the ordinary rhythms of family life.

A Christ-centered home isn’t built in one big moment, but in many small, consistent ones—reading Scripture together, talking about it, and learning to love God’s Word as a family.

My prayer is that your home would be filled with those same kinds of simple, meaningful moments this summer—where God’s Word is not just read, but truly treasured.

For many people, the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.

The Bible can feel big, intimidating, and hard to understand at first. You may open it wanting a deeper relationship with Jesus, only to feel unsure what to read or how to stay consistent.

But reading the Bible doesn’t have to be complicated.

You do not need to have perfect understanding or a long morning routine to begin spending time with God’s Word. Small, simple steps matter more than doing everything perfectly.

Over time, those quiet moments of reading Scripture begin to shape your heart, your faith, and even the atmosphere of your home.

If you’ve been wondering how to read the Bible when you don’t know where to start, I hope this post helps you begin simply and confidently.

If the Bible Feels Overwhelming, You’re Not Alone

Ready to start reading the Bible, but you don’t know where to start? I get it. I’ve been there, and so have many others before you.

With so many questions about where to begin, how long to read for, or which Bible version to read from, it’s no wonder it can be overwhelming.

The beautiful thing is, getting into God’s doesn’t have to be complicated, perfect, or look like everyone else’s routine you see online.

With a few simple suggestions below, getting into God’s Word will be less intimidating and slowly become part of your everyday life.

Start by Getting a Bible You Can Read Daily

For starters, purchase a physical Bible if you don’t own one yet.

There are many versions of the BIble, but I personally use an ESV. Some other good versions include the NIV, NKJV, and NLT. You can find some beautiful Bibles here.

All these versions have the same Biblical and historically accurate details, but with various changes in vocabulary.

For example, Proverbs 13:20 in the ESV says, “whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm”, whereas the NKJV says, “he who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed”.

Same same, but different.

Find a version you prefer and start from there.

Follow a Simple One-Year Chronological Bible Reading Plan

Next, follow a chronological one-year Bible reading plan.

This type of reading plan allows you, as the reader, to read the Bible in a way that puts all the events in chronological order. It helps connect the Old Testament to the New Testament and all the writings in between.

These reading plans also provide the verses to read each day and help keep you on track to complete the Bible in one year. There are lots of Bible reading plans available online today.

Focus on Knowing Jesus, Not Just Finishing Chapters

Furthermore, getting into God’s Word daily isn’t just one more task added to your busy schedule.

It’s a time to build a relationship with Christ through His living Word.

Friend, you’ll never be able to read the Bible enough that you’ll understand everything.

You’ll never be able to read it enough that it will become boring.

And you’ll never be able to read it enough that it stops impacting your life.

The Bible is living and breathing, as Hebrews 4:12 tells us. It is continually changing you and growing you closer to God.

It continually renews your mind every time you read it- bringing you closer to Jesus.

How to Build a Simple and Consistent Bible Reading Routine

One of the biggest misconceptions about reading the Bible is that it has to look perfect to be meaningful.

But building a consistent Bible-reading routine is often much simpler than we make it.

It doesn’t have to mean waking up at 5 a.m. every morning or spending hours studying Scripture. In many seasons of life—especially motherhood—that may not be realistic.

Consistency is usually built through small, sustainable rhythms.

Maybe that looks like:

• reading your Bible while the kids slowly wake up for the day
• spending a few quiet minutes with Scripture before bed
• listening to the Bible while driving or folding laundry
• reading one chapter during nap time

The goal is not to create a perfect routine.

The goal is to spend time with Jesus through His Word regularly.

One thing that can help is attaching Bible reading to something you already do every day. For example:

• reading your Bible with your morning coffee
• reading before your kids wake up
• keeping your Bible near your bedside
• listening to Scripture during school drop-offs or errands

Small rhythms often become lasting habits over time.

And if you miss a day, don’t let it discourage you. Bible reading is not about performance or checking off a box. It’s about building a relationship with Jesus little by little, day by day.

A simple and consistent Bible reading routine will not always look impressive from the outside. But over time, those quiet moments in God’s Word begin to shape your heart, renew your mind, and strengthen your faith in everyday life.

Pray Before You Read the Bible Each Day

Before opening your Bible, take a moment to pray.

It doesn’t need to be long or complicated.

You can simply ask:

• “Lord, help me understand Your Word.”
• “Teach me more about who You are.”
• “Help me grow closer to You.”

Prayer helps shift our hearts from simply reading words on a page to truly seeking God through Scripture.

And the beautiful thing is that you do not have to understand everything immediately.

The Holy Spirit helps guide and teach us as we spend time in God’s Word. Sometimes a single verse can stay with you throughout the entire day and speak directly into a season you are walking through.

Prayer also reminds us that Bible reading is not about striving for perfection.

It is about a relationship.

You are spending time with Jesus, learning His character, hearing His truth, and allowing His Word to shape your everyday life.

Even small moments of Scripture and prayer matter more than you realize.

You Don’t Have to Read the Bible Perfectly to Start

Finally, the Bible is nourishment for our souls.

It breathes life into a broken spirit and makes a blind man see his sin.

Each moment you spend reading the Word, God becomes your source of peace, joy, comfort, safety, and protector from the evil one.

Know this- no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17 ) when you’re walking with the Lord and washing yourself with His living word.

Friend, God isn’t looking for perfection in your Bible-reading routine; He’s after your heart.

So, bring your mess, your sorrows, your joys, and your weary heart to your Bible studying each time.

God welcomes it all.

“I want a relationship with Jesus, but I just don’t know where to start.”

Maybe you’ve felt that way too.

If you want a relationship with Jesus but don’t know where to start, you are not alone. Growing closer to God can feel overwhelming when you’re unsure where to start.

But the good news is this: you do not have to have everything figured out before coming to Jesus.

You don’t need perfect faith or all the answers.

You simply begin by coming to Him.

If you’re starting your faith journey or wanting to grow closer to God, I hope this post feels like a good place to begin.

If You Feel Unsure, You’re Not Alone

When you have a desire to grow in your relationship with Jesus, you may feel unsure about where to start and even question if you should even begin.

For starters, that desire to grow closer to God is not from you, friend, but from God Himself.

We read in John 6:44, Jesus says, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day”. Wow! We can praise Him for pursuing our hearts even in our fallen, sinful state.

If God has put this desire in your heart, but you are questioning where to start or even wanting to begin, know you are not alone in this tension.

Maybe you’re telling yourself, “it all seems so complicated and overwhelming”, or maybe you’re feeling unworthy of being loved by God because of your past mistakes.

Friend, you are not alone in this questioning. God can handle our doubts and has sent His one and only son, Jesus, to die on a cross for our sins- past, present, and future.

You Don’t Need to Have Everything Figured Out

When we start something brand new, it can feel intimidating because we’re beginners. We don’t know the ins and outs, we’re awkward, and we can even stumble our way through the start.

But as the days go by and we keep going, we find ourselves changing and even looking forward to the challenges ahead because our confidence grows.

This is how our faith walk looks, too.

We start small, like a mustard seed, Jesus says, but then the seed begins to sprout as we keep seeking to know God, and over time our faith grows into a beautiful wildflower that God waters daily with His Word.

A newbie doesn’t begin as an expert with all the answers, and when we first begin seeking a relationship with Jesus, we don’t need to have everything figured out either.

Remember- God isn’t after our performance, He’s after our heart. Let’s start there.

Start with Knowing Jesus

If you think about the close relationships in your life, be it your spouse, children, parents, siblings, close friends, etc., these tight-knit relationships grew over time.

You know these people well because you intentionally took time to get to know them on a deeper level.

With knowing Jesus, we start by spending time with Him. This can be done through prayer, daily Bible reading, journaling, meditating, and talking to God honestly.

It’s not just about knowing who Jesus is, but about knowing Him.

As we start to spend more time with God, we get to know Him more intimately. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”. This verse is so powerful for new and seasoned believers.

Intentionally seek Him often.

Simple Ways to Begin Your Faith Journey

If you’re starting your faith journey or want to grow closer to God, these simple ways below are a good place to start.

Start with Reading the Bible

It has been said that only 11% of Christians have read their Bible in its entirety. If we want to grow in our relationship with Jesus, reading the Bible is essential to our faith journey.

The Bible is God’s love story to us.

If you want to know who God is, read your Bible.

If you want to know who you are, read your Bible.

And if you want to grow in your relationship with Jesus, read your Bible.

As you begin to read God’s Word, it will change you from the inside out. You will experience a renewal of your mind.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world,  but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”.

When you pursue God through His living Word, He will change your heart. You will begin to see life through a Biblical lens and not a secular lens.

This is a blessing of being made new.

Talk to God Honestly

In your faith journey, you will experience challenges.

You may experience a loss of friendships because you pursue a relationship with Jesus. Talk to God about your heartbreak.

You may experience tensions in your marriage- bring it before God and ask Him for peace and wisdom.

Moreover, you may experience sickness, overwhelm, and family divisions.

Friend, with every challenge and circumstance that comes your way, talk to God honestly. He can handle your pain, anger, and sadness, and will give you peace that surpasses all understanding.

This is how you grow in your relationship with Him.

Don’t Overcomplicate Prayer

Furthermore, spending time in prayer will help grow your relationship with Jesus.

Prayer is incredibly intimate because it’s vulnerable.

Prayer is a time to speak to God from the depths of your heart.

But sometimes we can overcomplicate prayer and make it more of a chore.

It’s not about having all the right words to say or sounding eloquent. And it’s also not something we rush over just to get it done.

The One who made the heavens and earth hears our prayers. It’s Him we’re speaking to. What a gift!

Pray honestly, pray in faith, and pray often.

Find Christian Community

Jesus Himself had community. He had friends He connected with and built relationships with. They prayed together, encouraged and laughed with each other, cried together, and broke bread together.

If community was valuable to Jesus, it should be worthwhile in our faith journey too.

When looking to find a Christian community, attending a local church is a great start. You can meet families who live locally and have the same values.

You can also join a Bible study through your local church and grow your community this way.

Further, praying to God about finding a solid Christian community is also important. Pray for His direction and discernment in finding a local church that is Biblically sound and Spirit-led.

Pray that He would bring friends into your life who love Jesus too and will help you grow closer to Him.

Faith Grows Slowly

If you’ve planted a seed before, you know how slow the process can be before you see a sprout appearing.

Every day you check for moist soil and water when needed, you place it in the sunlight, and patiently wait for a sprout to appear.

At first, it seems like nothing is happening. Weeks go by, and nothing seems to be changing, but you continue watering, giving it sunlight.

Then one day, boom- there comes a sprout through the thick soil.

This is how your faith journey goes, too.

You start spending time reading your Bible daily, praying often, attending a local church, and maybe joining a Bible study. At first, life seems the same, but with new routines.

Then one day, a verse that has been confusing you suddenly makes sense. You start to notice how you’re asking God what to do in difficult decisions.

It’s in small moments like this where your faith grows. When nothing appears to change, God is moving mountains and making changes even in the ordinary.

Keep choosing Him daily, friend.

As your faith grows, small daily rhythms can help keep your heart rooted in Christ

Jesus Meets You Where You Are

Finally, you don’t have to have it all figured out to grow your relationship with Jesus.

He meets you right where you are- in your mess, in your sin, and in your doubts.

Friend, giving your life to Christ in full surrender is the most important decision you will ever make.

Jesus died on a cross for you and me. He gave His life so we could have eternal life with Him.

The good news is- death couldn’t hold him. Jesus, three days later, was resurrected, conquered death, and now sits at the right hand of the Father advocating for us.

Romans 10:9 says, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved”.

Jesus loves you, and He wants a relationship with you, friend.

I pray you no longer walk blindly without hope, but with full sight of His goodness and mercy today.

But often, we think that requires something big.

A perfect routine.
A structured family devotional every day.
Doing everything “right.”

And when life doesn’t look like that, it’s easy to feel like we’re falling short. But building a Christ-centered home doesn’t happen in big, perfect moments.

It’s shaped in the small, faithful rhythms of everyday life.

A Christ-Centered Home Is Built in the Ordinary

We can often view the mundane things we do daily, like cooking meals for our family, loading another basket of laundry, cleaning the home, educating our children, and everything else, as ordinary. Still, it is here in the daily routines that we actually shape and build a Christ-centered home.

God works through the ordinary rhythms of home life. This is where faith is lived out- in the doing. It’s not often in huge, elaborate routines, but in the small, unseen moments that matter most.

Plus, our kids get to witness our faith lived out in the mundane moments, and what a testimony to God’s goodness when we walk in His strength before our children’s eyes.

Daily Rhythms Shape the Culture of Your Home

What you do repeatedly becomes what your home feels like. Have you considered what you want your home to feel like? Are there daily rhythms that need to be changed or removed altogether?

You see, the rhythms we create- our stability, our peace, and our connection- impact the culture of our home and our kids. Galatians 5:22-23 says, “but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” The fruit of the Spirit helps us shape the daily rhythms of our home in our actions, our tone, and our love towards our family.

Friend, God desires us to walk in His Spirit, and when we do, we shape the culture of our home to be centered on Him.

Faith Is Meant to Be Woven Into Daily Life

While attending church as a family is significant, how we weave our faith Monday through Saturday has a much greater and lasting impact in building a Christ-centered home.

The words in Deuteronomy 6:6–7 give us the “how-to” in weaving our faith into our daily life- “and these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise”. Wow, what a powerful verse and a beautiful reminder to us as we go about our daily routines.

Our everyday rhythms- from the morning time, to the meals we make, to the bedtime routine, and everything in between- are simple ways to walk out our faith. In the small moments at the breakfast table, we can talk about God, in the car ride to practice, we can talk to God with our kids, or while heading to bed, we can thank God for His goodness today.

When we include God in all we do, our faith pours over in the daily, ordinary rhythms of life.

Small Rhythms Are More Sustainable Than Big Plans

As busy mothers, we can sometimes get trapped in big, elaborate homemaking plans, but high expectations often lead to burnout.

Instead, we can choose small daily rhythms that are realistic and can be repeated over time. This routine frequently leads to more consistency, sustainability, and a peaceful mama.

The rhythms we chose don’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.

Examples of Simple Faith Rhythms

In our home, we have a few simple faith rhythms we consistently follow. It doesn’t always go as planned, and that’s okay, but the effort is always made.

1. For starters, A Simple Morning Routine and Prayer. My kids will usually get dressed and be ready for the day, as I feed my baby and dig into God’s word. Some mornings are slow and quiet, while others are loud and interrupted. Either way, I always finish with a short prayer aloud for my kids to hear and be a part of.
2. Next, A Consistent Dinner Rhythm. While the dinner time varies, we do follow a consistent pattern at the dinner table. For instance, the first person who eats gets to pray for the meal, and after, we all go around saying two things we are grateful for and one way we served. This simple rhythm helps our family shift our focus and turns an ordinary dinner into something more meaningful.
3. Finally, A Simple Bedtime Prayer Together. Some nights, we will have a short family Bible study followed by a family prayer, and other nights, we only get to the family prayer. Either way, the time spent together creates a consistent ending to our day and brings us all, glorifying our Savior, together.

The simple faith rhythms you choose to follow in your family don’t have to be elaborate or perfect. Just choose to keep them meaningful and consistent.

These Rhythms Shape Your Children Over Time

While homemaking can sometimes seem unseen, the rhythms we pursue in our homes will shape our children over time. As God-fearing, Jesus-loving mothers, we work diligently to instill our faith in kids and pray that they will follow, love, and serve Christ, and even when they are old, they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

As time goes on, your children will begin to expect the morning prayer, recognize gratitude, and see faith modeled daily. You’re shaping hearts, not just managing a home. This homemaking is Kingdom work.

Start Small and Stay Consistent

My kids adored this Bible, and I even grew deeper in my faith and understanding of God’s truth because of this Bible.

The Ology: Ancient Truths, Ever New

This book is rich with Biblical truth, while filled with abstract concepts from the Bible, but makes them easier to understand with the use of creative examples, illustrations, and analogies. My kids and I enjoy this book so much, and we use it during our homeschool time.

Book 3

Brave Girls

My oldest, who is seven, loved this read aloud. We would read it as a bedtime story, and each chapter was filled with so much Biblical truth and real-life application. The girls- Hope, Glory, Faith, Honor, and Gracie were each wonderful to dive into their stories and get to know God deeper, and how He makes ordinary girls like them strong and courageous! 

Book 4

The Armor of God 

All my kids (ages 4, 6, and 10) enjoy this read-aloud on Ephesians 6:10-18. The book does a wonderful job teaching kids about the protective armor of God and how they can apply this Biblical principle. It’s filled with real-life applications and beautiful illustrations.

Book 5

The Wonder of Creation

This is a wonderful read-aloud that we use during homeschool. Each of the 100 devotions features a scientific fact or an easy activity for exploring faith, a short Bible verse, and a closing prayer. This book shows God’s hand in all creation and how we can witness Him daily.

Book 6

When God Made You

This read-aloud is so good! My goodness, I enjoy reading this book aloud to my kids. It’s filled with Biblical truth and inspires young readers to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God’s divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin to create for themselves. Even as an adult, this read aloud touched my heart.

Book 7

God’s Wisdom for Little Girls

This read-aloud draws wisdom from the book of Proverbs and encourages young girls to apply the positive traits and qualities illustrated in each verse. The illustrations are so timeless and calming to the heart. It provides beautiful reminders to my girls of who they are and who they belong to.

Book 8

God’s Wisdom for Little Boys

This read-aloud is so wonderful for boys and reminds them of how God made them in His image. There is so much Godly wisdom pulled from the book of Proverbs, and teaching young boys today how God will help them become men of God tomorrow. The illustrations are beautiful, and my son enjoyed reading this together.

One of my favorite Bible verses is in Numbers.

Now, if you have read through the book of Numbers, you know it begins with a set of rules and conditions laid out for God’s people.

They have recently been rescued from slavery and walked through walls of water, and now God has given His people the way to cleanse themselves when they come in the presence of their holy God.

When we reach Numbers 6, we find God reminding the Israelites that they are set apart as a holy nation in contrast to the rest of the world and receive a blessing.

The blessing God specifically told Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them…

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace (Numbers 6:24-26).”

Friends, this blessing from the Lord is still for us today.

In every blessing in this verse, God makes it known it is from Him and Him alone.

If your soul is weary today, declare this blessing over your life.

He loves you so much and desires to keep you with Him.
