Summer often brings a slower pace and a break from the normal school-year routine. While it’s easy to fill the days with activities, vacations, and endless snack requests, summer can also be a wonderful opportunity to help our children grow in their faith.

One simple rhythm we’ve added to our summer days is memorizing Scripture together as a family.

As Christians, we know that God’s Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). Summer provides a wonderful opportunity to spend extra time in Scripture and help our children hide God’s Word in their hearts.

If you’ve ever wanted to memorize Scripture with your kids but weren’t sure where to start, let me encourage you: it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Why We Memorize Scripture with Kids

We don’t memorize Scripture with our kids simply for the sake of knowing a certain number of Bible verses.

We memorize Scripture because God’s Word helps us know Him more.

As we read, study, and memorize Scripture, we grow closer to the Lord and learn to seek Him first. His Word is like a seed planted in our hearts that grows deeper roots as we continue walking in His ways.

We also memorize Scripture so we can encourage others with God’s truth.

You never know when the Holy Spirit will bring a verse to mind that a friend, family member, or even your own child needs to hear. God’s Word has a way of speaking directly into our lives at just the right moment.

As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, God’s Word is living and active, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Four Bible Verses We’re Memorizing This Summer

Here are the four verses our kids are memorizing this summer:

Psalm 119:11

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

This verse reminds our children that God’s Word helps guide our thoughts, actions, and decisions. When we know Scripture, the Holy Spirit can bring it to mind when we need wisdom and direction.

Proverbs 13:20

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

This verse opens up great conversations about friendships and choosing people who encourage us to follow Jesus.

1 Timothy 4:12

*”Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.

This verse reminds our children that even though they are young, they can still set an example to all ages of their faith through their actions, behaviors, and choices.

Roman 8:38-39

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This verse is a good reminder of the confidence we hold in our love, salvation, and eternity with Christ- our kids need to know nothing can take them away from our Savior.

How We Memorize Scripture with Kids

Our method is simple when it comes to memorizing scripture with our kids.

Every night before bed, I recite the chosen verse to our kids (ages 6–11), then I have them recite it with me, and finally I try to have them recite it back on their own. It’s not perfect, but we do this daily—and within just a few days, they’re usually able to say it on their own.

I also take time to break down the meaning of words they may not understand and explain how the verse applies to their everyday life. This helps Scripture feel real and understandable, not just something they are memorizing for the sake of memorizing.

We are called not only to be hearers of God’s Word, but doers as well (James 1:22).

One Simple Way to Create a Christ-Centered Home

Friend, this is one simple way we are working toward a Christ-centered home: reading and knowing God’s Word together.

We’ve seen this even in small moments—like our girls recognizing Bible verses during VBS that we had already been memorizing at home. It was such a sweet reminder that God is faithful to use even the simplest efforts to plant His Word deep in their hearts.

These are the kinds of connections we don’t plan or manufacture. They are gifts from the Lord as we remain faithful in the ordinary rhythms of family life.

A Christ-centered home isn’t built in one big moment, but in many small, consistent ones—reading Scripture together, talking about it, and learning to love God’s Word as a family.

My prayer is that your home would be filled with those same kinds of simple, meaningful moments this summer—where God’s Word is not just read, but truly treasured.

Summer is the perfect time to slow down and create fresh rhythms in your family to keep you centered on Christ.

Since summer often changes our normal routines, it creates an opportunity to be more intentional with our families and faith.

These 7 Simple Summer Rhythms For A Christ-Centered Family allow for deeper connection, lasting memories, and, most importantly, creating an intentional home that puts Christ first.

1. Start the Day with Family Prayer

For starters, summer mornings are the perfect opportunity to establish family morning prayer.

This is a wonderful way to start the day and come together as a family, glorifying God.

It doesn’t have to be a lengthy routine, but rather a rhythm that is established in your family culture.

When a family comes together to pray in the morning, it sets the tone for the day and also reminds our hearts to rely on Jesus throughout our day.

2. Take a Morning Family Walk

Additionally, a morning family walk is a wonderful rhythm to start in the summer.

We often call these walks “freeze walks” in our home because we try to go early (think 7 am) before it gets too hot.

These morning walks create a family culture around connection, noticing God’s beauty- the birds chirping, the pretty flowers, the snails slowly moving, and chatting with neighbors.

A morning family walk is a simple rhythm to start this summer.

3. Fill Your Home with Worship Music

Next, music can have such a profound influence on your home’s atmosphere- for better or worse.

The music we listen to in our home seeps into our minds and hearts, so it matters what we allow to be repeated in our mouths and in our children’s ears.

Playing worship music in your home all summer long is a wonderful way to keep the family Christ-centered.

We typically have worship music playing while we’re cooking, cleaning, eating, relaxing, and when we host guests.

When you play worship music in your home, you guard your minds and hearts with His love.

4. Enjoy Family Read-Alouds Together

Additionally, summer break is the perfect time to enjoy family read-alouds together.

There are so many wonderful books to read as a family and relish together (that’s my favorite part about this).

I recommend focusing on books that are high in moral character-building, fun, engaging for all ages, and even have a series.

5. Make Time for Board Games and Connection

Furthermore, summer breaks bring much time for board games.

This is a great way to build connection and create lasting memories.

Our family appreciates a good board game and plays them throughout the year.

While the list can go on forever, the end goal is simply spending time as a family this summer.

6. Memorize One Bible Verse Each Week

Moreover, summertime is a perfect opportunity to start memorizing scripture together.

You can choose one verse every week to practice daily and repeat to learn.

When we memorize scripture, we are hiding God’s word in our hearts and can pull from these verses throughout our day, week, and life.

His word is living and active- it’s not mere words we are reciting, but the Holy Word of God. His Word is powerful and heart-changing.

Here are some wonderful verses to memorize this summer:

Finally, summer is a great time to unwind the day with family prayer.

In creating this rhythm, a family culture is being established- we start the day worshiping God, we go throughout our day worshiping God, and we end the day worshiping God.

This end-of-the-day prayer is about coming together and glorifying God together.

It’s a time to thank Him, praise Him, and lift others in His name.

Small Summer Rhythms Can Have a Lasting Impact

Friend, these small summer rhythms are what create a Christ-centered home.

It’s not grand events that matter more, but the small daily routines we put in place that create a lasting impact on our family.

I pray your summertime is fruitful, prayerful, and wonderful.
